While glancing quickly at a box of tea at your local grocery store, many fail to realize that phrases such as “Artificial Flavoring” and “Natural Flavoring” often mean these ingredients are treated with sprays and chemicals meant to enhance the tea flavor in an entirely unnatural way. Even companies such as Teavana that are historically known for their “healthy” teas are guilty of this and leave their customers entirely blindsided.

These terms are loosely defined and regulated by the FDA. “Artifical flavors” are chemicals used to impart flavor without any nutritional value. “Natural flavors” may sound better when considering they are not derived from a synthetic source. However,  even those derived from natural plant or animal sources (yes, believe it or not) are processed in a lab and modified in ways that entirely strip them of their nutritional value. If a company lists either of these on their nutrition labels, they are clearly trying to hide something from you.

This is the lowest grade of tea that exists and is what’s left over after higher grades of tea are packaged to be sold. Tea dust is often stale and may sit in warehouses or on store shelves for weeks or months at a time before it reaches you, the customer.

In contrast, whole ingredients retain their flavor and aroma much better and contain a much higher level of antioxidants, Thus, the health benefits are much greater.

Our teas contain a mix of cut & sifted and whole ingredients. These ingredients are larger than tea dust particles, stored in small batches, and kept fresh in air tight containers that are stored away from heat, moisture, and light.

When buying tea bags from a retailer, you are limited to the tea blends and ingredient amounts decided upon by the company that you are purchasing from. If there is too much, or too little of any one ingredient, you either have to learn to love it or stop buying that tea. There is no ability to customize your own tea bags to suit your desired taste and you are at the mercy of what market research considers is the best tea blend and quantity of ingredients.

In addition, if you do seek out customization, companies will require you to place a minimum order quantity of at least 100,000 to 200,000 tea bags. I don’t know about you, but as much as I would love to have an endless supply of my favorite tea delivered to my door, that amount is beyond overkill and sure to sink your wallet. You would have no place to store it and no ability to consume it before the freshness of the tea dissipates.
